An Introduction To Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen Appliances

There are some things in life that we all use – and kitchen appliances are certainly one area we all have in common.

From cooking to cleaning, to washing and keeping our food cold and frozen, we all need to make sure we have the right appliances in our kitchens to do the job we ask of them. It’s clear that we expect a lot from our appliances – and that is why we have created this website.

We hope that by reading through the Buyer’s Guides, news items and articles, plus the Shop Now section, you will find it much easier to buy your kitchen appliances in future.

Let’s take a look at the various types that are on offer.

Washing machines

Washing machines are a boon in a modern household. When you consider that generations of old never had such a thing, you will understand why Monday’s used to be ‘wash day’!

That’s because it took all day to do the washing. Now though, things are very different. All you have to do is put in your clothes, put the detergent and fabric conditioner in, set the controls and press the start button. Some time later the machine will beep to tell you your clothes are washed and ready to hang up.

Modern machines are also more environmentally friendly as you can wash on a low temperature and still get your clothes nice and clean. The vast majority of the models available are what is called ‘front loading’ machines – that is, you open the door at the front rather than on top. This means they can be slotted underneath the kitchen worktop.

Tumble dryers

Tumble dryers are designed to get your clothes dry, rather than having to hang them out. They are ideal for people living in flats, where they may not be able to hang their clothes outside to dry, or for families who need to get their clothes dry quickly.

You can also get a combination washer and dryer, which saves space as it is essentially two machines in one. This is good if you need to have both but you don’t have a separate utility room in which to put them.

They can be expensive to run though, so many people use them only when they really have to, to get something specific dry in a hurry.

Dishwashers

A dishwasher is designed to clean all your crockery and cutlery for you. It can usually handle even the dirtiest of cooking pans, which is ideal if you have had people round for dinner and you can’t face the washing up yourself!

Most people with a dishwasher load up the machine during the day and then switch it on at night. When they get up in the morning all the dishes will be washed and clean and ready to put away.

Dishwashers come as either standalone appliances, or they can be built in. In the latter case they usually still stand on the floor, but the front is built so that it can accommodate having a door attached to it. In this way it will still fit in with the rest of the kitchen.

Cooking

The appliances involved with cooking in the kitchen fall into three categories – ovens, hobs and cooker hoods. You can buy special packs which contain all three items if you are going for integrated appliances; alternatively you can buy them separately. Obviously a standalone cooker will comprise both the oven and the hob in one.

You can get gas and electric hobs and ovens, and fan ovens are very popular as well. Some modern ovens will have special cleaning cycles that turn up the heat and burn any splashed food from the insides. The more expensive they get, the more functions they tend to have.

Hobs also vary considerably. Some have four rings to cook on, whereas the larger ones have five. Some electric hobs also have a cooking plate on which you can cook items such as bacon and eggs directly. Others have griddle plates built in as well.

With extractors and hoods, they are normally designed to be used in one of two ways. The easiest method is to have them re-circulating the air, cleaning it and sending it back into the kitchen. Alternatively you can duct it out to the outside of the building.

Refrigeration

Fridge freezers are available in many different sizes now. The standard is 60cm wide, but big American fridge freezers have double doors on them and are much wider.

You can also buy separate fridges and freezers if you want to have them underneath your kitchen worktop. In this case they can be either fitted with doors to match your existing kitchen (if they are integrated) or standalone. You can also get integrated fridge freezers for tall cabinets. In this situation the doors on the tall cabinets are attached to the fridge freezer with sliding brackets.

With an all in one fridge freezer you will get either a 50/50 split or a 70/30 split. This means that there will either be an equal amount of space for both the fridge section and the freezer section, or one will have 70% of the room and the other will have 30%.

In conclusion

As you can see we rely on a lot of different appliances to help us live our lives. From washing to cooking to cleaning and back to washing again, we would truly be stuck if we didn’t have all these appliances to fall back on in our modern lives.

You can also spend a lot of money in one hit if you are thinking of remodelling your kitchen and replacing all the appliances along with it! That is why it pays to find out as much as you can about each one before you make your decisions. Hopefully our website will help you figure out exactly what you need from your appliances, so you can buy just the right ones.

Happy shopping!
