Pushed For Space? Try Narrow Appliances For Size

Tuesday November 17, 2009

While we would all like to have a huge kitchen, that isn’t always possible. We have to make do with the space we have, and if you have a particularly small kitchen you might find it difficult to fit in all the appliances you want to have.

If a kitchen remodel is on the cards for you, think about how to use the space you have as effectively as possible. You may need to forego some appliances altogether, such as a dishwasher for example.

But before you write off that dishwasher altogether, don’t forget that you can buy slimline models that take up less space under the worktop. A slimline dishwasher is normally 45cm in width, compared with 60cm for a standard model. Those 15cm can make a lot of difference if you are tight for space, but you still get a dishwasher that is big enough to be practical.

And of course they are still available in either freestanding or fitted models. The only thing you need to check with regard to fitted models is the size of door you can get to fit to the front. If a 50cm door is the closest size available, you will only gain 10cm instead of the usual 15cm.

You can also buy slimline fridge freezers that are just 50cm wide instead of the usual 60cm. Again this may not seem to save a lot but when you add that to the 15cm saved for a dishwasher it gives you quite a bit of extra space to play with. And in a small kitchen those extra few centimetres can make a lot of difference.

Before you decide which slimline appliances to buy however, make sure you make a proper floor plan of your kitchen. Double check all your measurements and make sure that everything is correct. It also pays to decide where you are going to get your kitchen units from, so you can decide which ones you would like and start placing scale models on the floor plan. All you need to do is cut them out to scale from a piece of paper, if they aren’t already supplied with the kitchen brochure.

Make a few plans if you can and see how the layout would work with both slimline and regular appliances. Those slimline models could mean you are able to add one extra storage unit in where you wouldn’t be able to otherwise. This can make a big difference to your plans for your kitchen, so be sure you look at all the angles and options before you decide what to do.

As you can see, you have more control over your kitchen than you think you do. Even with the smallest size kitchen there may be several options open to you when it comes to buying new kitchen appliances. Just be sure you work out all the options first and don’t buy anything until you are completely ready and sure that you have chosen the right items. Once you have done that, you will know you have the best possible layout you can have.
