Should You Buy The Cheapest Kitchen Appliances You Can Find?

Thursday November 5, 2009

Going shopping for new kitchen appliances can be quite an eye opening experience. For example, the prices can vary much more than you might think. For example, you can pay anything from less than two hundred pounds to several thousand pounds for a cooker!

Now most of us wouldn’t spend anywhere near that top amount if we want a brand new cooker of any kind – integrated or otherwise. But it does throw up the question of where you should fall in the overall price range. Is it worth buying the cheapest appliance you can find, or should you be spending more money?

First of all, you need to think about what appliance you are buying. For example, if you need a washing machine you might want to consider the idea of paying more to get a washing machine and dryer combined. But if you know you won’t use the dryer very much, it would be cheaper for you to stick with just the washing machine on its own.

Do you see how this works? If you identify your needs first, this means that you are much more likely to get the best buy, not to mention the best appliance to match those needs.

So let’s say you want to buy a new oven. The first question would be whether you want to buy an integrated one or not. If you do then you will also have to think about buying a separate integrated hob. Some manufacturers, websites and stores do offer package deals like this, so watch out for those as they can save you some cash. If you want a standalone cooker then of course the two will come as one complete appliance.

With some appliances you need to think about how you will use them too. This doesn’t apply with items such as washing machines or fridges, but it will apply with an oven. Do you cook a lot of different things? Are you constantly hosting parties and having trouble fitting everything in to your current oven? Or do you only use it a few times a week to heat something up?

Obviously, if the latter example is more akin to your cooking habits then there is no point spending a lot of money. Why get an oven that is packed with features you will never use? You may as well get one of the cheapest ones that just has very basic cooking features on it.

However if you struggle with a basic oven now, then something larger with more features – like a double oven – would be ideal for you. It would be worth spending more on because you would use it and it would help you virtually on a daily basis.

So don’t just think about the actual cost – think about what the item is worth to you as well. It could make all the difference between choosing something you will love – and choosing something you wish you hadn’t spent so much money on.
